For as long as she can remember, Lisa has loved Jesus and the church, embracing God’s love and grace for all people. Rooted in this faith, she has had a lifelong commitment to showing compassion and working for justice for all people.

Lisa received a BA degree in English Education from Florida Southern College and a Master of Divinity from Candler School of Theology at Emory University, graduating with Honors in 1995.

Though she grew up mainly in the Methodist church, Lisa became member of Metropolitan Community Church in September of 1994 and became involved in a variety of ministries, including children’s ministries, worship leadership, Christian education, as well as serving on Mentoring Teams for 3 pastoral candidates (all of whom are now successful MCC Pastors).

She completed her clergy candidacy at Christ Covenant MCC in Decatur, GA and was ordained there in 2001. She has served as Director of Christian Education at Christ Covenant MCC, Volunteer Clergy at Our Hope MCC in Athens GA, and most recently, Interim Worship Leader at Christ Covenant MCC.

Currently, Lisa’s full time ministry is through Georgia Community Support and Solutions, a non-profit agency that works with people with disabilities and their families. There, Lisa is the Director of the Family Support Department that serves over 1,000 individuals and their families. She has nearly 20 years experience in social service and non-profit management.

Lisa’s particular interest at this point is in assisting communities, particularly communities of faith, to become leaders in being welcoming and supportive of all people, including sexual minorities, people with disabilities and their families, and other oppressed and excluded people.

Partnered for 12 years, Lisa’s partner, Tammy, is the Technical Services Librarian at Columbia Seminary. Their son, Taylor, is a 17 year old high school junior, and is a dancer at North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. In what little spare time she has, Lisa’s hobbies include reading, watching performing arts, and eating good food.

My Dear Friends,

You have indeed done something that is rare: left me speechless! Words cannot express my gratitude for the amazing Pastor Appreciation Day yesterday. It was one of the best days of my entire life. The fellowship, the feeling, the love that flowed through the building - it was like the whole building vibrated the sense of the Spirit. It might have been Pastor Appreciation Day, but it truly was a celebration for the whole community. Thank you to everyone who cooked, coordinated worship, brought gifts, performed, participated, just showed up. I love you all very much.

One of the things I got from yesterday was an incredible hope and faith for the future. We have done an incredible job with looking at our past to answer the question "Who have we been?" However, we still have some tasks yet to do to continue on this Intentional Interim journey that we have been on together. To that end, we have several events and opportunities for input that are upcoming.

I will explain more about these at our Congregational Meeting on Sunday, October 21, but one of the tools we will use in our next few Intentional Interim Tasks will be surveys - I actually learned to use Survey Monkey to design these! They are a series of short - about 5 questions each - surveys that will give us information about our congregation as we begin to answer the question "Who are we now?" Please take just a few minutes to complete these surveys - you don't have to do them all at the same time, just please do it within the next 2 weeks.

These results, along with some research I am doing about the Chattanooga area, will help us with our next Forum, which will be on November 4 from

1pm to 3pm.

We will again have a light lunch. We will focus in this Forum on doing what we call a SWOT Analysis (if you don't know what that is, you need to come to the forum! and if you do know what it is, you know we need as many people as possible to make it effective). Ask those who have been to previous forums and they will tell you it has been worth their time.

Here are the links to the 4 surveys:    (still NOT too late to fill out...)

I will have hard copies available for those who do not have Internet access. I am looking forward to seeing what we might learn from these surveys.

..

God is doing mighty things at The Rock MCC and I want us all to be a part of it. Please join us on this journey.

In the Peace of Christ,
Rev. Lisa Heilig,

Interim Pastor,

The Rock MCC

My favorite season of the church year is here!  Advent is the season four weeks before Christmas in which we prepare for the coming of Christ.  It begins this year on December 2 and ends on Christmas Eve.  It is a season that we use to prepare ourselves for the birth of Jesus, the coming of Christ, bringing peace, hope, joy, and love.

The word Advent means "coming" or "arrival." Advent is marked by a spirit of expectation, of anticipation, of preparation, of longing. It anticipates anew, the reign of an Anointed One, a Messiah, who will bring peace and justice and righteousness to the world.  Advent is celebrated as a time of joy and happiness as we await the coming of the Ruler of All.

In order to assist us in preparing our minds, hearts, and souls, we light the Advent wreath each Sunday. Because we will use blue as the primary sanctuary color for the Season of Advent, the colors of the candles will be three blue candles, and one pink candle. One of the blue candles is lit the first Sunday of Advent, a Scripture is read, a short devotional or reading is given, and a prayer offered. On subsequent Sundays, previous candles are relit with an additional one lighted. The pink candle is will be lit on the third Sunday of Advent.  The center candle is white and is called the Christ Candle, lit on Christmas Eve. The central location of the Christ Candle reminds us that God with us in Jesus is the heart of the season, giving light to the world.

God is doing something new within us, with our community.  Advent gives us an opportunity to get ready for that something new, to prepare ourselves.  So, let us love one another well this Advent and help folks experience the presence and power of Jesus Christ, God with us already, giving light to the world.

Wishing all an Advent season full of peace, hope, joy, and love.

Rev. Lisa

Advent Prayer by Henri J. M. Nouwen

 Lord Jesus,

Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas.

We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day.

We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us.

We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom.

We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence.

We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light.

To you we say, "Come Lord Jesus!"

Amen.
